PRESS RELEASE: ICT-ET LAUNCH WITH GOOGLE, MCIT AND ETHIO TELECOM ON JANUARY 18, 2011 @ HILTON
January 13, 2011
Thursday January 13, 2011- For Immediate Release

There have been several progressive and significant steps taken recently to improve the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector in Ethiopia, namely the creation of a ministry focused solely on this sector [Ministry of Communications and Information Technology], the management outsourcing of Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (now Ethio Telecom) to France Telecom and now, the establishment of ‘Information and Communications Technology Association- Ethiopia’ but better known as ICT-ET.

ICT-ET, founded by a few private companies, was formally established on November 25, 2010 with the Charities and Societies Agency (License #2055) to expose, engage and enable the private sector within the ICT industry in Ethiopia. The association will have three sectors within its scope, namely Information Technology, Communications Technology and Broadcasting Technology. Due to the dynamic nature of this industry, it’s inevitable however that these three technologies will converge as is evident in other parts of the world.

To launch the association, ICT-ET in collaboration with Google, the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MoCIT) and Ethio Telecom will be hosting an event at the Hilton on January 18, 2011. The event will consist of two different sessions. The morning session will include the Keynote Speech from officials within MoCIT as well as speeches from Ethio Telecom , Google’s Business and e-Gov team as well as ICT-ET which would be of interest to all organizations within the ICT Sector. The afternoon session, on the other hand, is focused on software and application development which Google will be covering and it’s open to everyone within the software and application development community.

According to Ato Seyoum Bereded, Interim President of ICT-ET, ‘Although ICT-ET’s members will primarily come from the private sector, individuals, students and other organizations within ICT are more than welcome to participate in all events hosted by ICT-ET as well as to join as associate members.’

For the launch on January 18, 2011, Ato Seyoum added ‘We encourage everyone to meet and greet their peers within this dynamic industry but due to limited space at the launch event, we ask all interested parties to pre-register via email at info@ictet.org.‘ When asked why he was’ Interim’ President, Ato Seyoum went on to say that ‘The management team is drawn from the initial member organizations but elections will soon take place to either approve/replace the interim committee. We will be covering this briefly during the morning session.’
