Ethiopian Commodity Exchange named as CIO 100 recipient for the 24th annual award program, CIO magazine of the International Data Group (IDG) announced today.

The award program recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT).

The magazine recognized ECX as one of the CIO 100 award honorees that were selected through a three step process. Companies fill out an online application form detailing their innovative IT and business initiatives. The honorees will be then picked by CIO editors after reviewing recommendations of a team of judges. “We are delighted to be the first organization in Africa to receive this prestigious award which exemplifies excellence in strategic and innovative use of IT in line with our strategy,” Eleni Gebre-Medhin, CEO of ECX, said. “This continues to position ECX to connect all buyers and sellers in an efficient, reliable and transparent market by harnessing innovation, technology and commitment to excellence”.

Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief of CIO Magazine & Events said that this years CIO 100 award draws well-deserved attention to companies that are not only innovative with IT but creating genuine business value as well.

Established in April 2008, the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange provides a platform for its market and trades grains and pulses including coffee and sesame seeds, two of Ethiopians top export commodities. Since its operation ECX has processed over 1.4 billion dollars in trade volume with zero default and zero system downtime affecting its trade operations. The 2011 CIO 100 awards will be presented at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado from August 14 to 16.

The Information and Communications Technology Association – Ethiopia (ICT–ET) is a newly established non-profit association based in Ethiopia . The association was founded by a few private companies and was formally established on November 25, 2010 with the Charities and Societies Agency (License #2055) to EXPOSE, ENGAGE, and ENABLE the private sector within the ICT industry in Ethiopia. The association has three sectors within its scope, namely Information Technology, Communication Technology, and Broadcasting Technology. ICT-ET is in the process of recruiting members from the ICT industry in Ethiopia ranging in size from small start- ups to large corporations in addition to recruiting associate members who are individuals involved in ICT.

ICT-ET exists to provide a common voice for businesses within the Ethiopian ICT sector. Full membership is open to any commercial organization involved in ICT including but not limited to software/web solution providers, systems integrators, IT consultants, IT outsourcing firms, value added service providers, communications companies and those engaged in the broadcasting sector. Associate membership is open to individuals who are engaged in the aforementioned industries.

The association's purposes are to EXPOSE, ENGAGE and ENABLE the ICT Community in Ethiopia by:

• developing an ecosystem including policy recommendations that will enable our industry to grow, make Ethiopia more competitive and help Ethiopians become avid users of technology

• promoting better use of ICT by business, government and public services to achieve world-class performance

• offering a wide range of networking opportunities that foster business and professional development for our members

ICT-ET developed its website ( with the support of ModernETH and has now officially launched it. The website has various capabilities to cater to the needs and requirements of its members including membership & mailing list registrations, diaspora mentorship forums, calendar of events, surveys, research and resources among other things.

ICT-ET will participate at the ICT Exhibition to be held between June 29 and July 3, 2011 where it will provide additional information on the association. Furthermore, ICT-ET’s first general assembly will also be taking place during this period as well as ICT-ET’s second Technology Innovation Series where another international technology company will demonstrate its technologies as was done at the initial Technology Innovation Series in January 2011.
